JOB DESCRIPTION AND POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

The Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position in a field broadly related to sedimentary processes and the evolution of Earth's surface. We seek creative colleagues working to understand connections between Earth’s surface dynamics and deep-Earth, ocean, climate, and/or biological systems. We are especially interested in applicants whose research, teaching, and diversity efforts would complement existing departmental strengths in geobiology, geochemistry, and geophysics.

The Department of Geosciences is part of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences, which houses research programs spanning a broad range of Earth and planetary science, including the Earth and Environmental Systems Institute and the Energy Institute. Successful applicants will be expected to engage with our community by developing vigorous, externally funded research programs, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, and working to advance diversity in geosciences. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in geosciences or related field at the time of appointment. We anticipate filling the position at the rank of Assistant Professor, although in exceptional cases more senior candidates will be considered. The appointment could begin as early as July 1, 2021. Review of applications will begin on January 4, 2021 and continue until the position is filled.

The Department of Geosciences at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for an Assistant Professor in Integrated Energy Systems (IES).  This position is part of a strategic initiative to further enhance our status as an international leader in energy research and education. The IES initiative spans the College of Engineering and the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) with strong connections to the Institutes of Energy and Environment and the Materials Research Institute. IES priority areas include, but are not limited to: Renewable, Non-renewable, and Hybrid Energy Systems, Smart Energy Systems, and System Optimization of Energy Generation and Distribution.

In Geosciences we seek a creative colleague who will develop a vigorous externally funded research program, teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and demonstrate commitment to advancing equity and inclusion. We are particularly interested in candidates who contribute to and complement Penn State’s strengths in energy geosystems, the geoscience of conventional and unconventional energy including fossil and geothermal; topics in carbon sequestration and storage; gas hydrates, hydraulic fracturing, induced seismicity, geomechanics, basin and geostructural analysis, fluid-rock interaction, and hydrogeology.  Penn State hosts the Water Initiative and the College of EMS hosts the Center for Geomechanics, Geofluids, and Geohazards, which provide opportunities for collaboration in areas of natural hazards, materials science, and energy engineering.

The Department of Geosciences is part of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences (EMS) and houses top-ranked research programs in geology, geophysics, geochemistry, and environmental/ climate sciences. For this position, we are particularly interested in candidates who contribute to and complement our existing and long-term strengths in plate tectonics, hydrogeology, hydrogeophysics, geohazards, geodynamics, seismology, geodesy, glaciology, rock and sediment mechanics, geochemistry, and energy geomechanics.  Penn State hosts campus-wide initiatives in water resources and the College of EMS hosts the Center for Geomechanics, Geofluids, and Geohazards which provide opportunities for collaboration in the areas of natural hazards, material science, and energy engineering.
